7 Reasons You Should Try Aqua Aerobics Now

Aqua AerobicsThis is a guest post by Becky Flanigan

The beginning of the year is a great time to try new things. People looking for an alternative to their typical workout routines would be well served to take a look at aqua aerobics. This enjoyable workout option has a lot to offer. Here are 7 great reasons to try aqua aerobics:

1) For the health benefits. The point of exercise first and foremost is for the health benefits. Get in the pool with an aqua aerobics class and it will quickly make you a believer in the quality of workout it provides. You’ll find yourself jumping out of the water at the first break to go get a drink of water, you’ll be breathing hard, and you can feel the effect of water resistance on arms and legs. Health benefits – you definitely have them from aqua aerobics.

2) Low impact. Runners in particular like the low impact part of aqua aerobics, to give tired knees a break from the pounding of the trail. The cushioning effect of the water does that nicely – it provides a cardio burn without having to pound glucosamine to protect your knees. Working with traditional weights, there’s always the effort to let the weight down without a jarring effect. Weight exercises in the water eliminate that part, but still provide a great way to work out the arms, shoulders and legs.

3) For the fun of it. Does it seem a little discouraging to walk into the gym and see all the serious people, looking almost unhappy as they go about their routines? Go take a look at an aqua aerobics class in session – the difference is noticeable. People are working out, for sure, but they look like they’re enjoying themselves. Between sets there’s a lot of laughing and smiling. The soothing effect of the water may have a part, but as well – aqua aerobics is just fun.

4) To stay in shape. Who wants to go to the beach in the summer looking a little unfit because it was too cold to work out over the winter. Or they just didn’t get around to weight workouts because it was such a dull routine. If aqua aerobics is enough fun that you’ll actually do it – there’s a great reason to get involved, because then you will work out and stay in better shape than if you sat at home.

5) Great cardio. Are you a little skeptical about whether you can get a good cardio workout in the water? Try aqua kick boxing, or aqua Zumba, then decide if it gave you a good workout. Weren’t you really breathing hard after class? If that’s still not enough, go aqua jogging for a mile or two. Injured runners who used aqua jogging for several months usually say they had no lessening of their cardio condition. Aqua workouts give a solid cardio component.

6) Cross training. Sometimes it’s just time to add a different element to the workout routines, and aqua aerobics can provide that. Trying aqua tai chi for relaxation, or aqua kick boxing for a cardio alternative can provide a solid workout unlike the other exercises on the calendar.

7) For the variety. Some people think of aqua aerobics as standing in the water waving arms and legs around – far from the reality. Classes are offered in Zumba, kick boxing, tai chi, yoga, weight workouts, and of course there’s aqua jogging for a solid cardio burn.

Regardless of the exercise goal for the new year, an aqua aerobics workout has all the elements to provide a fun and yet physically demanding exercise routine. You don’t need any fancy workout equipment, just a pool and a foam noodle (can be found here) to get started. Start the year out right and jump in the water with one of those classes.
